CHENANGO COUNTY – New York Regional Interconnect Inc. has provided the statistics, but the numbers may not measure the affect its direct current transmission line could have on the historical integrity and identity of Chenango County.
According to a report in NYRI’s Article VII filing, 265 areas of archeological and historical significance lie along or within one quarter mile, on either side, of New York Regional Interconnect Inc.’s proposed power line. The line would run through 44 miles of Chenango County on its way from Marcy down to Rock Tavern.
Dr. David Drucker, director of the Chenango County Historical Society Museum in Norwich, said that a power line, such as NYRI’s, compromises the historical allure of Chenango County because of the county’s direct tie to the past and deep residual appreciation for specific local histories that don’t exist everywhere else.
“There’s that sense that there is a rich and healthy local history that people are interested in. Part of the history is that sense of community,” Drucker said, citing the histories of the Chenango Canal, agriculture, genealogy, local villages and the City of Norwich. “This (power line) is an impersonal thing, that is not connected to anything local, and to some people, that is unthinkable.”
