Local athletes place at state track and field meet

CANTON - Three Chenango County athletes came home with top-four finishes at the New York State Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday at St. Lawrence University.
Sherburne-Earlville senior, Ashlee Lathrop, unveiled a revamped technique in the discus to shatter her own school and Center State Conference record finishing second in the Division II championships with a throw of 133-4. After placing second on Friday, Lathrop came back for the federation tournament on Saturday, and her third-place showing (128-4) was the best-ever finish for a Sherburne-Earlville athlete in the federation tourney. “We broke down some things during the week, and we were able to increase her rotation and torque,” said S-E coach Tom Piatti. “Her form was just a ton better, and she came to play this weekend. Over her five measured throws over the weekend - three were faults - all of them were better than her previous best throw.”
Norwich senior Ryan Benenati, who eclipsed 21 feet for the first time last week (21-6) in the Section IV state qualifier, nearly matched that leap cruising to a second in the Division II state championships covering 21-1 1/4. Benenati’s finish is the highest for a Tornado track athlete since Karen Snyder’s state title five years ago.
S-E senior Adriane Marcellus, seeded fourth in the Division II 800 meters, passed two runners over the final 150 meters to wind up fourth in 2:17.92. Marcellus is the Marauders’ school record-holder in every running event from the 200 to 1500 meters.
