Sherburne heritage days in 2nd year

SHERBURNE - The Sheburne Historic Park Society will offer a unique opportunity this weekend. With a lawn full of Civil War re-enactors at their School Street park, residents will have an opportunity to see what an authentic regiment looked like more than a century ago.
The park society will host its second annual Sherburne Heritage Days Weekend this Friday, Saturday and Sunday on their park grounds and at different locations around the village. The events of the weekend came out of a reenacting group’s interest in a local soldier.
“The 61st re-enactors’’ group were here in Sherburne doing research on Charles A. Fuller of the 61st Regiment at the library,” Town Historian Rose Wellman said. “They said they would like to do something here in honor of him.”
That was two years ago, and this year in addition to the 61st Regiment NYVI’s return, the re-enactors of the 117th NYV Regiment will camp and drill at the park.
The 61st group will do a special wreath laying ceremony at the Civil War monument at the center of the village on Friday afternoon, followed by a pot luck supper at Paddleford Park for our visiting regiments. That dinner will not be open to the public. They will also do honorary salutes to our Civil War Men at the Sherburne Quarter Cemetery on Saturday morning and on Sunday morning the same ceremony will be held at the Sherburne West Hill Cemetery and the Episcopal Cemetery.
During the day on Saturday the groups will perform drills, skirmishes and usual camp duties. A candlelight tour in the evening is planned by the 117th re-enactors, who are a surgeons’ group that depicts silent scenarios of the war and its aftermath. This will be followed by a bonfire and letters from home written by local soldiers, as well as stories and song.
