Local man admits child sex crime
NORWICH - After given what a prosecutor called an “opportunity” implicit in a 10 -year plea bargain for heinous local sex crimes, a middle-aged man was scolded for not offering any signs of remorse.
Gary L. Cleveland, 50, pleaded guilty to attempted criminal sexual act in the first degree and rape in the second degree for incidents in fall of 2005 during which he sexually imposed himself on young girls. He received a 10-year determinate sentence for the first count and 2-and-a-half to 7 years in state prison for the second count. The two sentences will run concurrent to one another, and Cleveland will be a registered sex offender when he is released.
Cleveland admitted in County Court Monday that during the month of September, he attempted to have oral sex with a female who was 10 years of age. He later admitted that the month before the incident with the pre-teen, while in the Town of Greene, he had sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old female.
District Attorney Joseph A. McBride said a 10-year sentence for Cleveland’s crimes should be viewed as an opportunity, and that upon his release he should stay completely away from children.
County Judge W. Howard Sullivan asked Cleveland if he had anything to say. “No,” the defendant replied initially.
“Mr. Cleveland, I was sort of hoping you would apologize for what you did,” the judge said. “What you did was a sick, sick, sick thing.”
“Oh, I am,” the defendant then said.
