NORWICH - Gregory Webb and Andy Fu have been granted with the opportunity of a lifetime.
Webb, Norwich High School’s valedictorian, and Fu, salutatorian, said they are now going to use their achievements to further their education.
“For a while, I didn’t really want to go to college. I wanted to go to Princeton,” Webb said. “But I got rejected.”
Webb said although he was disappointed, he knew going to college was necessary. So, in April, he decided that he would apply to St. John’s University.
“It was the only school I could apply to in April (because) I missed all the other deadlines,” he said. “I wanted to go to the New York City area, so at least I can still have that.”
Webb, who says he is looking toward majoring in physics, is a person of many activities. Currently a member of a local classic rock band called ‘Three Mile Smile,’ he is also in jazz band, has played football, basketball, baseball, and is a member of the National Honor Society. And although Princeton didn’t pan out, he has taken on a positive approach.
“I got a scholarship, so that worked out,” he said. “At least I can be the man at St. Johns.”
Fu, who plans on attending Rutger’s University next fall, said he has decided to move closer to his family, who moved out of state last year.
“My parents used to own the Tung Hsing House restaurant (23 S. Broad St.) but now own another restaurant in New Jersey,” he said. “So I travel there every weekend to help out at the family restaurant.”
Fu said on top of keeping his grade point average up, he is involved in student government and has participated in “a few sessions of Spanish club.”
“I’ve enjoyed being here,” he said. “Everyone is nice. It’s been a good experience here.”
Webb said the same.
“Everyone is friendly. A lot of things are community based, and there is a lot of class pride here,” he said.
The two young men, whose grade point averages were not available at press time, said they are now looking forward to the next stage of their lives.
“It’s going to be a good time,” Webb said.
