County leaders strategize against NYRI

NORWICH - The heads of seven counties lying in the pathway of the proposed high voltage power line will conference via telephone Tuesday afternoon.
Chenango County Board of Supervisors Chairman Richard B. Decker said he expected to leave the conversation with a sense of what the county’s cost will be to collectively hire legal representation to fight the proposed power line.
“We need to agree on an amount and find a way to funnel the money through,” he said. The New York Association of Counties will facilitate the teleconference.
Decker said he didn’t know where the county’s share would come from nor whether the money would be distributed to a selected county, legal firm or individual. He also said each county would pay the same amount.
Both houses in the state’s legislature have committed to fund a portion of the legal representation. Decker said he “supposed” state representatives would help handle the distribution of funds.
“We need to hire someone who will just rip their hearts out,” Decker said, referring to shareholders of New York Regional Interconnect.
