Senate hearing on NYRI project tonight
NORWICH - Officials from the company proposing construction of a high power line through Chenango County will be called before state senators at the Norwich High School tonight.
Representatives from New York Regional Interconnect, an Albany-based private company, are to appear before the Senate’s Committee on Energy and Telecommunications at 6 p.m. in the school gymnasium. The purpose of the hearing is for senate members to gain information relative to the 400 kV line that NYRI plans to unite Marcy and Rock Tavern.
“Our focus, and my goal, is for my constituents to first get some answers to the questions that they could not get answered,” said Senator Thomas W. Libous, R-Binghamton. “We are going to ask NYRI questions, a whole host of questions that we want answers to.”
Power company spokesperson John Pierce said that project manager William May and NYRI regulatory affairs representative Robert Malicki will be at the hearing along with legal representation. In addition to other state senators not on the committee, the New York State Public Service Commission will also be represented. Libous said he hopes the public and his colleagues will gain a clear view of what awaits in the Article VII process that could approve the project. “I’m hoping the public and elected officials come away with a very firm understanding of what the PSC process is,” he said. “I think that is critical.”
Service commission Public Affairs Director David Flanagan concurred that his office will be at the hearing “to explain the Article VII review process,” and that they are still in the early stages of reviewing NYRI’s application. When asked about what effect this hearing could have, if any, in the PSC’s review process, Flanagan said he was unsure. “Certainly we will be there and we will hear what is said,” he explained. “I’m not sure what the senators plan to do with the information.”
After also being asked whether or not a senate hearing involving a project in the Article VII process was a common occurrence, Flanagan responded, “I’d have to do some research; we haven’t had a case of this magnitude in a long time.”
