NORWICH – Fun met with education, and the future met up with the past on Saturday, during the 6th Annual Chenango County Dairy Day at the Chenango County Fairgrounds.
Children of all ages zipped from one exhibit to another – a hay bale maze, animal petting areas, sheep sheering demonstrations, or the “farmer-for-a-day” full-participation learning activities – which were all taxed with the exuberant laughter of the participants and their on-looking parents.
“The main target here,” said Dairy Princess Tori Lints of Oxford, “is to get kids out to see the importance of dairy farming, and how everything gets processed.”
While the kids worked off excess energy, the adults had a chance to take in the vast number of displays dealing with agriculture, the dairy industry, local farming history, conservation, health, equipment and technological innovations.
“Our object here is to educate the non-agricultural public on what the industry does,” said Chenango County Farm Bureau President Bradd Vickers. “We educate and have fun simultaneously. The general public can ask us questions, and we can clarify the issues.” The bureau provided literature, displays, and performed puppet shows meant for children, but Vickers believes some of the informational content could benefit adults in the area of agriculture as well.
On both basic and complex levels, people had a chance to see how their daily lives are affected positively by the often forgotten number one industry in Chenango County.
