OV passes budget

SOUTH OTSELIC – The only district in the county not to pass its school budget the first time around did so Tuesday, as Otselic Valley Central School voters approved an amended $7,819,634 expenditure.
Voters turned down a May 16 budget that would have spent $20,000 more. Since then, the school board was able to make the lower proposal by realizing savings in unexpected staff turnovers and whittling the drivers’ education program from the summer offerings for a year. The new budget reflects a 4.7 percent increase over last year’s expenditures and the tax levy of $2,514,513 is 7.43 percent higher than the last. The amended budget passed 129 to 105.
“I think people had a chance to talk about the situation a little more and when it comes right down to it, people care about keeping a good program for their children,” Superintendent Lawrence Thomas said.
