List to attend Lobsterfest grows

NORWICH – As anticipation for the 2006 Lobsterfest grows, so mounts the list of guests who will attend the election-year fundraiser.
Thomas L. Morrone, county Republican Committee chairman, said the GOP fundraiser has attendance commitments from a number of candidates, including the party’s man for the top seat in the state.
Gubernatorial candidate John Faso, state attorney general hopeful Jeanine Pirro, and congressional aspirant Raymond Meier are all expected to don bibs at the July 30 Chenango County Lobsterfest. Beyond raising funds for the party, the annual foray is an opportunity to break bread, or shell, with those whose names will appear on the ballot.
“It is a great way for people to meet those who are running for office,” Morrone said.
Also expected to be mingling among the 700 expected guests at the Canasawacta Country Club are senate hopeful Kathleen “KT” McFarland, candidate for state comptroller Chris Callaghan, Supreme Court Judge Dennis McDermott, Assembly hopeful Peter Lopez, and county Treasurer William Evans. Also expected to attend are longtime party representatives, James L. Seward, Thomas W. Libous and Gary D. Finch.
Beyond a meet-and-greet, Morrone said Lobsterfest is a means to pass along what issues are important to the state’s representatives. He said even though it is a Republican fundraiser, guests and representatives from both major parties have historically attended.
“It is the area’s biggest non-political, political event,” the chairman said. “No matter what political affiliation you are, you will see people there from both sides of the aisle enjoying themselves.”
Besides the quality of crustaceans, the county’s party head expects conversation on the two topics that have dominated local news since the start of 2006 to float freely.
“The power line, that will be the biggest topic of discussion at the Lobsterfest. Of course, there is still the issue of Camp Pharsalia,” Morrone said.
An 8 a.m. golf outing leaving from the club will give players a chance at a free car on the eighth hole. Teams are still being put together, and the course is open to the public. The main party will be from noon to 4 p.m. Tickets are $60, and they are available from either Morrone, or at Chiarino Insurance on 50 North Broad St.
