New art gallery opens in downtown Norwich

NORWICH – “Practical” seems conservative. “Prevalent” seems ordinary. When most people think about art, they might not think about the conservative or the ordinary. Isaiah Sutton and Nicole Mazzole didn’t mention them either. However, their new establishment, the Art Upstairs Gallery, is predicated on tapping a prevalent resource in a practical way.
“I knew some artists and I knew they needed an opportunity,” said Sutton, a life-long resident of Norwich and a graduate of Cornell University. “I think Norwich needs some help enhancing the culture of the downtown area.”
The Art Upstairs, located in what used to be “The Loft” music store above the Music Shop Pub on South Broad Street, is set to open in grand fashion with its first show at 7 p.m., Friday July 7.
“We want to incorporate artists, musicians, and many other ideas, and try and do something different,” Sutton said. “I grew up here and always wanted something more, hopefully we can do that.”
Sutton and Mazzole have already lined up exhibits geared towards modern and contemporary art forms, in mediums ranging from paintings to blown glass. The art work thus far has been submitted by local and state-wide artists, along with a few Norwich natives who now live elsewhere.
“Hopefully we can achieve a stronger art community in the area,” said Mazzole, who believes the gallery can illuminate an already numerous, but somewhat hidden local community of artists. “We want to create more networking opportunities between artists – because we have many in this area and across the state – and hopefully we can all benefit by feeding off each other’s ideas.”
Both owners say they are always looking for local artwork, and they plan to coordinate monthly shows with local events in the area, such as the Gus Macker 3 on 3 tournament this weekend, the upcoming Chenango Blues Festival in August, and the Colorscape Chenango Art Festival in September.
After Friday, the Art Upstairs Gallery will be open each week Wednesday through Friday 4-8 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information email artupstairsgallery@yahoo.com, or call 316-0604.
