NBT marks 150th anniversary with parade, fireworks Saturday
NORWICH – NBT Bank is pleased to announce that the renowned New York City Fire Department Emerald Society Pipe and Drum Band will headline the bank’s 150th anniversary parade in Norwich this weekend.
On Saturday, at 7 p.m., NBT Bank will be hosting a parade running from South Broad Street, near the bank’s headquarters, to East Main Street. In addition to the FDNY Pipe and Drum Band, the parade will feature bands, giant helium balloons, floats, antique vehicles, clowns, costumed characters and units consisting of representatives from local organizations and businesses. Beginning at dusk that Saturday, the bank will sponsor a fireworks display at the Chenango County Fairgrounds on East Main Street.
NBT Bank opened for business as the Bank of Norwich on July 15, 1856, in a small storefront on South Broad Street, about a block north of its current headquarters.
The FDNY Emerald Society was formed in 1961 by a group of firefighters of Irish descent as a way to preserve and encourage their Irish traditions and culture. Over the years, the band has appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. On many occasions, the band has performed at the request of New York City mayors and foreign dignitaries. The Emerald Society has played at Shea Stadium, Madison Square Garden and Carnegie Hall. Its members perform at every FDNY function and at every funeral for fallen firefighters, including more than 300 memorials in the aftermath of 9/11.
NBT Bank provides personal banking, asset management and business services. The independent community bank, headquartered in Norwich, has 83 offices in 18 upstate New York counties. NBT Bank’s parent company, NBT Bancorp Inc., had assets of $4.9 billion as of March 31.
