Ag development council looks for more input

NORWICH – In order to help spearhead two agribusiness projects in the region, the Chenango County Agricultural Development Council has requested more input from government.
ADC’s Rebecca Hargrave made the request at a meeting of the Planning & Economic Development Committee Aug. 8.
“We used to have two supervisors on the council. There’s been none since the last election. We would like to have a least one representative,” she said.
Chairperson Linda E. Natoli, R-Norwich, said her appointment to the committee “fell through the cracks” when she took over from former chairperson Wayne C. Outwater. Town of New Berlin Supervisor Ross P. Iannello, unaffiliated, volunteered to represent the county and was subsequently endorsed by the full Board of Supervisors Aug. 14.
In addition, Hargrave asked that the resolution for council membership be changed to allow for more appointees and less members-at-large. The change would cut the number of at-large members from the agriculture, education, business and financial sectors from 15 to nine.
The council currently consists of individuals farmers and agribusinesses in addition to representatives from the Farm Bureau, Cornell Cooperative Extension, the county Planning Department, Opportunities for Chenango and NBT. Hargrave said she would like to recruit a member of the Chamber “for an agribusiness and agricultural development perspective.”
The committee moved to accept the changes.
The two projects under discussion currently are developing a slaughterhouse business and growing hops crops for a potential brewery. Hargrave said the brewery would “not necessarily” be in Chenango County.
“We would be more involved in the growing end.”
