GREENE – Greene sophomore Megan McDermott scored her first two varsity goals leading to the Trojans’ shutout win Wednesday.
McDermott tallied 6 1/2 minutes into play on a give-and-go from Shelby Averett. That combination worked its magic in the second half as well. Haley Burns, Jessie Bates, and Autumn Layton added goals for Greene (1-1).
“We worked hard on moving the ball during practice yesterday, and that worked out well for us,” said Greene coach Randy Smith. “We controlled the midfield today and kept it away from their big players.”
Greene plays in the Sherburne-Earlville Tournament Friday.

GREENE – Despite early adversity, Greene remained composed and rallied for an opening win Wednesday morning against Afton.
The Crimson Knights’ Jessica Winans scored on a deflection just three minutes into the contest; however, Afton managed just two shots the rest of the game.
Megan Boeltz tallied the first of her two goals five minutes later after a penalty corner, and she banged home a penalty stroke 3:49 into the second session for the deciding margin. “We had some great passing and good opportunities,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “I was pleased with our first game of the year, and when we needed someone to step up, they came up with a good ball.”
Greene is idle until next weekend’s Oxford Tournament.

WINDSOR – Norwich rebounded from a shutout loss earlier this week to even its mark on the season.
A year removed from a 6-1 loss to the Black Knights, the Purple Tornado reversed that loss as well with essentially the same lineup. “It was a nice turnaround, and the key words for us today were to focus and finish the match,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “We worked on that during our off day, and it paid off.”
Haley Runyon rallied from 4-1 down in first singles to prevail in straight sets, while Laryssa Bernstein and Sarah Fritz clinched the victory winning in three sets. Bernstein and Fritz trailed 2-0 in the third set before reeling off five straight games to take command. “It was a pressure situation (for Laryssa and Sarah) because they were the last match playing and everyone was watching,” Stewart said. “They came through under pressure.”
Vicky Cole earned her first win of the season at second singles, while Krissy Collier moved up from doubles to win her first match in singles play.
Norwich plays at powerhouse Seton Catholic Central today.
