Record number of artists exhibiting at Colorscape this year

The atmosphere will be filled with music, commotion and art will come alive at this weekend’s Colorscape Chenango fine arts show.
The community will be getting into gear this week for the 12th annual Colorscape Chenango, being held Saturday and Sunday in both East and West parks in downtown Norwich.
The festival draws in artists nation-wide, coming as far as Canada, Virginia and Florida. The park will be packed with 85 vendors for this year’s event. This year will hold the record for the number of artists in attendance, increasing from 80 craftsmen last year.
“There will be a lot of new vendors this year with an unusual number of painters,” said Colorscape Director Peggy Finnigan.
This is Kristin Deady and Scott Griffin’s first time exhibiting the festival. They will be demonstrating the art of flameworking. Kristin says it will be nice to come back to where she grew up and show people about the process of the art she makes.
She also said that many of the same vendors return year to year and that says good things abut the festival.
Michael Smith, an artist from the Niagara Falls area, has been in attendance for the past four or five years and says it’s one of his favorite shows he does all year.
“The show mixes the live entertainment with the art in a way that works together to provide and enjoyable experience,” Smith said.
The cultural experience of the show provides a variety of interest for many types of artists. The categories of art include ceramics, 2-dD and 3-D mixed media, sculpture, glass, photography, water color painting, jewelry, fiber, metal works, drawings and pastels, oil and acrylic paintings, wood, and other miscellaneous pieces.
“I think we have the best selection of artists and artwork. It is a joy to work with such creative people,” Finnigan said.
The art truly comes alive during this year’s show as Golden Artists presents a painting project on Saturday at 1 p.m in Art Zone 2 next to the Golden Artist tent. The project is in support of Chenango United Way. It is called the “Chair-iot” Race for children ages 10 and up. Three people will be working together – one will be sitting in the chair painting, one will be pulling the chair and one will be running for more paint. Their mission will be to travel around pre-set easels in an oval, similar to a circus maximus shape, while trying to paint the canvas banners that will be attached to the chair.
Chenango United Way and Golden Artist have been working on this project for many months.
“We are thrilled that Golden and Colorscape staff have agreed to help us out with this project,” said Chenango United Way Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco.
The completed banners will be used as new signage for the United Way township committees. The idea is to replace the old “thermometer” signs. The new banners are being disbursed in Greene, Norwich, Oxford, Unadilla Valley, and Sherburne-Earlville.
