Greene wins with ball control

Greene 28, Whitney Point 6
GREENE – Greene used ball possession as its best defensive weapon controlling the clock and turning back Whitney Point in a non-league contest that was closer than the final score indicates.
Corey Breck threw for 66 yards and a 12-yard TD pass to John Carlin, and closed the scoring in the fourth quarter scampering 25 yards. “This was another physical game for us,” said Greene coach Tim Paske. “They (Whitney Point) never gave up, and even though the score doesn’t seem close, we couldn’t pull away when we wanted to.”
Greene had a cozy 22-0 lead at halftime, a first half not that dissimilar to last week’s two-TD lead over Oxford. Keith Savory’s one-yard scoring run in the first put Greene on the board, and one minute after Breck’s TD pass to Carlin, sophomore Nate Whittaker returned an interception 28 yards for a score.
Whitney Point averted the shutout on Mike McCrone’s 34-yard scoring run on a reverse play. “We established the ground game today with Savory and Corey had a nice all-around game; he stepped up and made plays,” Paske said. “We made a few other good plays, but shot ourselves in the foot with penalties, and turnovers. We need to iron those things out before we start division play.”
Savory finished with 105 yards on 21 carries, and the 2-0 start is the first in Paske’s four-year coaching tenure.

B-G 19, Unadilla Valley-Edmeston 0
BAINBRIDGE – B-G overcame five turnovers with a handful of big plays, and its stifling defense limited the Storm to 93 total yards in posting a second straight shutout.
“Our defense was unbelievable tonight,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly, noting the play of senior captain Willie McGinnis who led the Bobcats’ charge. “Our kids were just all over them – especially in the second half.”
When it wasn’t turning the ball over, the Bobcats’ offense was quite effective. Chris McGinnis scrambled on a bootleg and hit Chad Cornish on a 50-yard TD pass in the first quarter. Cornish made it a two-TD lead in the third quarter scampering 70 yards to paydirt on a sweep, and Willie McGinnis dashed 25 yards for six points in the fourth.
“We shot ourselves in the foot a number of times on offense, but they are correctable things we need to improve on,” Mattingly said. “My hat’s off to UV. They are a physical team and came in and played well.”
Cornish finished with 100 yards rushing and Chris McGinnis threw for 87 yards.

Ilion 25, Sherburne-Earlville 0
ILION – Ilion smothered Sherburne-Earlville with its defense and built a 19-point halftime lead on the strength of its running game Friday night.
Dean Viti rushed for 200 yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns for the host club. Meanwhile, the Marauders, coming off a 315-yard game on offense the previous week, were held to 93 total yards.
“They blitzed the heck out of us and we couldn’t handle it,” said S-E coach Mick James. “We weren’t prepared for that I have to do a better job of that.”
James did say his team improved significantly on defense in the second half, and the lone score by Ilion came after a fumbled punt snap deep in the Marauders’ end.
Ike Johnson led the S-E defense with three sacks.

Oxford 39, Groton 0
OXFORD – Oxford responded to an opening loss the previous week with a stout defensive effort and a prolific offensive attack that netted 39 points over the first three quarters.
Junior Scott Shackleton rushed for 81 yards and three touchdowns, while Steve Locke and Wes Tynan added rushing touchdowns. Nose tackle Travis Frank recovered a fumble in the end zone to account for the other Oxford points.
“Shackleton had a real big day for us on offense,” said Oxford coach John Curtis. “We were able to rotate our offensive and defensive players quite a bit and everyone got a lot of playing time.”
Groton has suffered back-to-back shutouts losing 49-0 to Lansing the previous week.
