Oxford 3, G-MU 1
OXFORD – Some who may have overlooked Greene at the start of the season, especially after an opening loss, will not be doing so now.
The Trojans won their fourth straight game and captured their third straight Oxford Blackhawks Tournament title Saturday beating Norwich for the second straight season.
Mike Thomas and Brad Van wert each had two goals for Greene, and Van wert’s tally at 26:27 of the second half moved the Trojans to a 3-1 advantage. “We had two of our role players score two goals tonight, and that kind of fired up our team,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “It showed the rest of our team that we do not have to rely on our two main players (Mike Porter, Ben Williams). This was an important tournament victory from the standpoint of keeping the Greene tradition alive, and winning this is a big part of our momentum.”
Norwich hung close in the first half getting a goal from Christoff Knapp off an Alex Fanelli pass.
Oxford gave up an early goal to G-MU in the first five minutes, but had three tallies to answer the Raiders to win the consolation game, 3-1.
Taylor Bates tied the game with 5:31 left in the opening half, and Scott Seiler headed in the go-ahead goal following an Alex Parks shot with just under 12 minutes remaining. Oxford added insurance just 40 seconds later with Arik Nisbet knocking home the goal after another Parks shot richocheted off the G-MU goalie.
Peter Schmidt had G-MU’s goal. “This gets us back on track and some momentum heading back into the league,” said Oxford coach Tim Paden. “I was afraid what might happen to the rest of the season if we didn’t win this game.”
In Friday’s contests, Peter McBride had two goals for Norwich including the tie-breaking tally in the second half in the Tornado’s 4-2 victory over the Raiders. Meanwhile, Porter and Williams supplied the Greene offense in a 2-0 shutout of the Blackhawks.
