Norwich book store offers thanks to customers in Saturday event
NORWICH – A thank you celebration will be held Saturday at The First Edition Bookstore, 13 South Broad St. To show the community her appreciation for all of the support over the years, book store owner Lisa Mody invites the public to share in the fun.
A free craft table will be available from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children and the young at heart will be making beaded and ribbon bookmarks. A Winnie the Pooh coloring contest will be held.
“Kids love characters,” Mody said. That is why she has scheduled Winnie the Pooh to appear. The honey-loving bear will be on hand to visit with the kids. He will be making appearances from 11 to 11:30 a.m., 12 to 12:30 p.m. and 1 to 1:30 p.m.
Also appearing at the bookstore will be McDonough author Suzanne Bloom.
“Lisa is great,” Bloom said of the book store owner. “We try to do something (at First Edition) with each new book.”
Bloom, an author and illustrator, is scheduled to have haer tenth book released next fall. Her titles include “We Keep a Pig in the Parlor,” “No Place for a Pig” and her personal favorite, “A Splendid Friend Indeed.”
“I fall in love with the characters each time I create a new set,” Bloom said.
She will be signing books and reading stories on Saturday. Story time will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon, and from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Plenty of copies of her newest book, “Melissa Parkington’s Beautiful, Beautiful Hair,” written by Pat Brisson and illustrated by Bloom, will be available. In preparation for this book, Bloom spoke with children in area schools, and asked them what problems went along with having long hair.
“It was a great way to connect with the kids,” she said.
Bloom has been writing since she was a child in the third grade. She began her career in writing 20 years ago.
“We’re fortunate as a community to have our own independent bookstore,” she said of First Edition. “It’s a tremendous and fabulous asset,” Bloom said.
Mody will offer 20 percent off all in stock Winnie the Pooh books, and 10 percent off all other in stock books. The thank you celebration used to be an annual event at First Edition, but Mody has not been able to do one in several years. She said she is looking forward to beginning it again.
