Railroad insists it's not abandoning Chenango line

NORWICH – A legal notice published in last Friday’s paper that informed the public of New York Susquehanna & Western Railway’s pending abandonment of its Chenango Forks to Sherburne route was merely a formality, a spokesperson for the company said Monday.
Railroad industry regulations require properties to examine their routes and report underutilized sections on a routine basis, NYS&W Public Relations Manager Nathan Fenno said. Plans were underway to publish the map prior to the June 26 floods that severely damaged several areas along the route and caused it to be shut down.
The route has been traditionally underutilized, Fenno said.
“We are supposed to update this map periodically. We are required to look into a crystal ball and say what may happen.”
Chenango County’s small handful of rail customers are currently being served by cars running back and forth to the Cooperstown-based company’s station in Utica.
Local Chamber of Commerce executives were taken aback by the railroad’s closure this summer as negotiations have been underway for some time with two potential new business ventures that would rely on rail transportation of goods. Fenno and Economic Development Director Maureen Carpenter have met with the businesses’ executives on at least two occasions.
“We hope to be able to open the line open as long as these projects come through,” Fenno said. Both projects would involve creating alternative energy, such as biodiesel fuel from soybeans. Fenno said his company is “very excited” about alternative fuels. “It is quite a growth area for the railroads and central New York agriculture.”
Carpenter told members of the Chenango County Planning Board just three days prior to the public notice that the Chamber was “very confident” the railroad would resume service, perhaps as early as the spring.
NYS&W rights-of-way from Sangerfield to North Norwich was a portion identified by New York Interconnect, Inc. for its 200-mile long electrical power line. Fenno said Friday’s public notice and NYRI’s project had “absolutely no connection whatsoever.”
