Sherburne joins in historical weekend celebration
SHERBURNE – The Town of Sherburne Historic Park Society has joined the 8th annual Fall Festival History Weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, some of the historical societies and museums of Madison, Onondoga, Oneida, and now Chenango counties will host a free, educational weekend, featuring self-guided tours of historic central New York.
This is the first year that Sherburne’s Historic Park Society will join in the festivities. The counties-wide organization has wanted to expand the history weekend to include Chenango County for some time, but so far, Sherburne is the only one to accept the invitation.
“The purpose of this annual event has been to raise awareness of local history in our small communities and to increase heritage tourism throughout central New York,” Sherburne Town Historian Rose Wellman said.
The Sherburne portion of this event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Sherburne Historic Park. Sites on this portion of the tour include a restored one-room schoolhouse, a small railroad section house, a water gauging station from the Chenango River, and an older log cabin that will be the future home of the historian’s office.
