Mobile clinic brings dental care to Chenango

NORWICH – Opportunities for Chenango has been working with American Mobile Dental to create affordable and quality dental care for our county. Tuesday, American Mobile began visiting the City of Norwich. They have a large white RV-style van specifically refitted and designed to accommodate to dental patients. It is literally a mobile dental office, offering quality treatment and willing to accept any private insurance or Medicaid. Walk-ins are welcome, but for better convenience patients can make an appointment by calling 1-877-248-6684 (1-877-24-tooth).
Dr. Charles Randolph has been practicing dentistry for 37 years. Dr. Randolph practiced in Westchester and attracted a number of politicians and celebrities as patients, but now he is retired. For the last two years, Dr. Randolph has been working with American Mobile Dental to try and bring quality health care to regions struggling with shortages in both certified dentists and institutions willing to accept Medicaid.
“It’s been the best two years of my life ... people we’ve been treating here are so much more appreciative,” said Randolph. “There was a huge need upstate. The more we looked into it, the more we saw a need,” he said.
American Mobile Dental is not a non-profit organization, but it is an organization oriented to helping people facing economic obstacles obtain quality health care, said Ed Lorch, vice president. “Nobody’s getting rich; that’s really not what we’re looking for... basically we cover our costs,” said Lorch. American Mobile Dental has four vans downstate in the New York City area and only one upstate. They are planning on beginning a program in California in a few weeks and then possibly Ohio someday, said Lorch. They plan on having a permanent office in Oneonta some time later this year.
Right now American Mobile Dental travels through Chenango, Otsego and Scoharie counties. “The community has been helping a lot, OFC (Opportunities for Chenango) has definitely played a big part in helping us,” said Lorch. The mobile dental office will be returning next Thursday, Oct. 5 and can be found out front of the OFC building on West Main Street.
