Republicans open Norwich headquarters

NORWICH – The Republican Party headquarters was packed full of people Thursday night for the grand opening of the office. Politicians and their supporters filled the small storefront on South Broad Street, despite the pouring rain and thunder outside.
Chenango County Republican Chair Thomas Morrone welcomed everyone to the event. “This is political season, and we have some real heated races,” he said. Morrone encouraged everyone to vote, even in the case that a candidate was running unopposed. He introduced several of the Republican politicians who were at the headquarters, and gave them each a brief chance to speak.
Assemblyman Gary D. Finch was the first to speak. He kept his comments short, saying, “It’s great to represent the people of Chenango County.” Finch also encouraged everyone to get out and vote. He reminded the crowd about the importance of this year’s congressional race. The race is critical in determining which party will gain control of the house. “We need a good, strong Republican vote. Chenango County has always done that for me,” Finch said.
Morrone agreed with Finch, and added his support of the congressional candidate Ray Meier. “Ray has done a good job in Senate, and I would really like to see him represent Chenango County,” Morrone said. He also added his support for Senate candidate Tom Libous, and Madison County Judge Dennis McDermott. Those three candidates were unable to attend the gathering.
Assemblyman Cliff Crouch was the next to speak. Crouch told the group he planned to run a very positive race, because he does not believe in a negative campaign. He encouraged the group to take home some of his political signs. “Save them for two years down the road,” he said. “The signs won’t wear out, and I’ll be back.”
Morrone then introduced Mayor Joseph Maiurano. Maiurano was appointed the position of mayor after Robert C. Raphael passed away in late May. Morrone praised the work that Maiurano has done. He acknowledged Raphael’s accomplishments, but credited Maiurano with restoring order to the City Council.
Maiurano spoke of a positive future for Norwich. “We feel by having a positive attitude, we can bring people together,” Maiurano said.
The City of Norwich Republican Committee announced its endorsement of Maiurano for the position of mayor at the event.
