Oxford 34, Newfield 12
NEWFIELD – Oxford scored on its first three possessions of the second half, and in the meantime stopped a fourth-and-one in the fourth quarter to squelch a Newfield drive and move over the .500 mark for the first time this season (3-2).
Scott Shackelton scored on two TD runs in the second half and finished with a career-high 165 yards rushing. Eric Betts added a 50-yard dash in the third quarter to pull away.
“We ran the ball pretty effectively, and the second half was about as well as we have played offensively this season,” said Oxford coach John Curtis.
Newfield’s Mike Armstrong scored on a 47-yard run, and Dylan Shults hauled a 11-yard TD pass from Armstrong early in the second quarter to give the hosts a 12-7 lead.
Trevor Nelson caught a 20-yard TD pass from Steve Locke for the go-ahead points, and Locke finished 7-for-11 for 120 yards. Ian Grundner added a five-yard TD in the first quarter.
Defensively, Oxford allowed 259 yards – most of those coming in the first half. Dustin Christophersen was credited with three sacks.

Sidney 40, Greene 20
SIDNEY – Sidney isn’t blowing people away like it did in last year’s state title run, but it still is making more than enough plays to continue an unbeaten streak that is now at 16 games.
The Warriors, who scored two touchdowns in the final minute of the first half, added two late touchdowns in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter to pull away from previously-unbeaten Greene (4-1). “In the second half, Sidney won the line of scrimmage,” said Greene coach Tim Paske, noting the difference in the game. “We were right there at 26-20 going into the final minutes, but sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce your way. We still control our own destiny (to make the playoffs), and our focus is on winning our next game.”
Sidney, unable to generate any type of a running game in the first half, threw for all 139 of its passing yards in the opening half. Two quick pass completions set up Jarred Mertz’s 5-yard TD run with 45 seconds left in the quarter.
Greene turned the ball over on its next play from scrimmage, and two plays later, Parker Umbra hooked up with Andy Foote on a 28-yard TD pass with 13 seconds left.
Instead of squibbing the next kickoff, Foote lofted a deep boot to the 10-yard line. Greene sophomore Nate Whittaker covered the 90 yards on the final play of the half to pare the lead to 13-6.
Greene’s fortunes brightened after a defensive stop to start the third quarter. The Sidney punt snap sailed over Umbra’s head, who got off a short kick to David Micha. Micha traveled only 15 yards for six points and Greene’s only lead.
Sidney advanced 75 yards on its next drive forgoing the pass and sticking with its base, double-wing offense. Mertz’s second TD run, this one from one yard, put Sidney in front for good.
Mike Burpoe’s one-yard plunge early in the fourth upped the Sidney lead to 26-13, and Greene had no answers defensively for the Sidney attack. “They went back to their base offense, and we tried everything we could, but weren’t able to stop them,” Paske said.
Corey Breck threw his fifth TD pass in as many games to Nate Whittaker cutting it to 26-20.
Chase Mott broke free for a 40-yard TD run at 1:41, and Mertz returned a Greene fumble 54 yards for a score. Mertz also had a 66-yard fumble return touchdown earlier this season in a 28-19 victory over Norwich.

B-G 20, Groton 0
GROTON – Even with Groton committing nearly its entire defense to stopping the B-G run, the Bobcats found enough cracks to put three scores on the board, while also registering its third defensive shutout of the season.
Returning from a week off, Chad Cornish rushed for 79 yards, and had one of three Bobcats rushing touchdowns. Nate Seymour busted a 45-yard TD run in the third quarter, and Willie McGinnis added his 10th TD of the season rushing in from three yards in the fourth.
Groton was limited to 147 yards against a B-G defense that was rattled by Delhi last week in a 28-7 defeat. “Defensively, again the kids stepped up, and they had a tough time running the ball,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “The defense kept us where we had the opportunity to work through things on offense and get some points on the board.”
The Bobcats improved to 4-1 and can clinch a winning season next week against Deposit. Mattingly took note of his team’s self-awareness after Friday’s victory. “The kids have made progress, but to their credit, they know they need to continue to get better,” Mattingly said, “and they know they were capable of playing better than we did Friday. The know they have to come back and have a good week of practice and continue to improve.”

South Jefferson 29, Sherburne-Earlville 6
LIVERPOOL – One good quarter for South Jefferson, one bad one for Sherburne-Earlville. That quarter came at the same time, and SJ put three TDs on the board in the second stanza to coast to a big lead over the winless Marauders (0-5).
Jake Smith rushed for 208 yards and three touchdowns, and Smith scored twice in the second stanza when he broke over multiple runs of 20 yards or more. “I bet (Smith) had about 170 of those yards in the second quarter,” said S-E coach Mick James. “We played pretty good defense in that first quarter, but for some reason we were sleepwalking in the second.”
After allowing an early touchdown in the third, the Marauders drove for a score. Sophomore Nate Kline, getting his first significant time on offense, scored on a five-yard run. S-E had two other possessions in which it drove inside the South Jefferson 10-yard line over the final two periods, but failed to score a point. “I felt we dominated most of the second half, it’s just that one quarter everything fell apart,” James said.
S-E plays unbeaten Cazenovia this weekend.
