Last chance to register with FEMA
NORWICH – The flooding of late June ravaged Chenango County and the surrounding areas. Even though months have gone by, some people have still not registered with FEMA and New York State, and FEMA officials are warning this may be your last chance.
According to Public Information Officer George Barnette, 1,459 people locally have registered with FEMA; however, he believes there are still quite a few people in need who have not. “A lot of people are holding off, figuring out how much money they need and what it’s for,” Barnette said. Barnette doubts that FEMA will extend the deadline for a third time. “You have to get into the system or it doesn’t matter how much you need,” Barnette said.
The longer you wait to register, the longer it will take before the money comes in. Many homeowners who have already registered with FEMA and New York State are still waiting on state and federal aid to make the necessary repairs needed before winter.
“It’s all over the map in terms of when the money comes in,” Barnette said, explaining that many factors determine how long it will take. Once you call and register, an information and registration packet is mailed to you. You generally receive it in a week to ten days, Barnette said. It is up to the person registering to determine how long it will take to fill out and send back. “If you have done your part, and haven’t heard anything within two weeks, call the FEMA help line, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362),” Barnette said.
Of the 1,459 people who have registered so far, figures updated on Sept. 15 indicate FEMA has paid only 255 applicants. The 255 people were paid a total of $525,252. This number includes money distributed through flood insurance payments. New York State has paid 315 people over $1,243,000.
This leaves a number of residents still waiting for money from FEMA and the state, and many residents are still dealing with plumbing and heating problems. With winter closing in, many Chenango County residents need that money in order to replace or repair hot water heaters and furnaces. According to Norwich City Code Enforcement Officer Jason Lawrence, “We’re still dealing with 100 plus plumbing and heating permits.” Lawrence explained that many individuals are waiting for their state and federal aid to come in before they can even begin the process.
If you have not yet registered with FEMA and New York State, your last date to do so will be on Monday, Oct. 16. To register with FEMA call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., or register online at www.fema.gov. To register with New York State call 1-888-7-NYS-AID (1-888-769-7243). Lines are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Apply,” encouraged Barnette. “We’ll sort out how much is needed later. If you don’t make the call, it doesn’t matter.”
