Local resident appears on Rachael Ray Show
SOUTH NEW BERLIN – Rachael Ray is a star of The Food Network, has her own line of cook books, and has just debuted a new syndicated daytime talk show produced by Oprah Winfrey’s production company, but she has not forgotten her upstate New York roots. When Ray was approached about doing a segment on cheerleading, she said she would only do it if her high school cheerleading coach, Karen Lyons, could be on the show.
Lyons has been a teacher for over 30 years. Although she currently teaches in Cooperstown and lives in South New Berlin, Lyons taught business and coached cheerleading in Lake George until 1985. Ray was one of her students. “I didn’t know she would be a star,” Lyons said of Ray. “It doesn’t surprise me in any way, shape or manner, but I didn’t expect it.”
On the day The Rachael Ray Show debuted, Lyons received a phone call from a producer, asking her to be on the show.
Lyons was whisked away for a two-day stay in New York City. “It was an awesome experience,” she said. “They treated me like royalty.” Lyons was put up in the Helmsley Park Lane Hotel. She had her own dressing room on the set, and was attended to by hair and make-up artists. “Everyone was really attentive. They asked a lot of questions about what Rachael was like as a cheerleader.”
According to Lyons, the popularity has not changed Ray. “She’s very grounded. She has a sense of her roots and where she is from, and she is just as in awe of where she is as anyone else,” Lyons said.
Lyons used the opportunity to speak to as many people as possible. As a business and financial management teacher, she said she observed as much as she could pertaining to all of the different job opportunities on the set. “I learned a lot to bring back to my students,” she said.
When she was filming the show, Lyons said it didn’t feel like she was on television. “It was just like I was standing there, talking to one of my students,” she said. Although Lyons is a little nervous about seeing herself on television, she will be tuning in from her classroom. The show will air at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning on WBNG Channel 12.
