Accused serial burglar appears in court
NORWICH – Kevin Begeal appeared before the Norwich City Court Monday morning to be officially charged with the beginning of a long list of crimes. It took 12 minutes before City Court Judge James Downey finished reading the list of charges against Begeal, accused by police of committing a rash of burglaries to local businesses over the weekend. The list read in court included five felonies and 10 misdemeanors.
There are many charges still pending and the criminal investigation is still under way, but Begeal faces several charges of 3rd degree burglary and possibly a handful of 2nd degree burglaries, because at one of the shops he allegedly stole a dagger and subsequently for every burglary committed after, he can be considered armed. He is also facing several counts of petit larceny, 3rd and 4th degree criminal mischief charges.
Begeal, 21, formerly of Oxford, was on parole for a prior felony conviction and only had been out for a few months before his arrest Sunday. Begeal has an extensive rap sheet, said police. Begeal has never had a job and did not complete his high school education, it was reported in court yesterday. Raised in the Oxford area, he now has no legal residence.
Bail was set at $10,000 per felony and $1,500 per misdemeanor, totaling $65,000 cash bail. Begeal was scheduled to appear in court again today to answer to more charges that were pending police investigation. Additionally, Begeal is also scheduled to appear in Village of Oxford court tonight for six more felony burglary charges and a slew of misdemeanors. Investigators in the Syracuse area are also seeking the culprit in a series of burglaries that took place in their area and wish to question Begeal. Begeal resided in Syracuse with his mother prior to coming to Chenango County.
District Attorney Joseph McBride told the court he would like to get Begeal’s case before the grand jury this week. The court began the process Monday of appointing a public defender. Police said Begeal was being fairly cooperative and at this point he seems to have acted alone.
