Frontier announces impending layoffs at Sherburne call center

SHERBURNE – Frontier Communications has announced there will be layoffs at the repair department in the Sherburne call center. Officials could not say how many layoffs will be necessary, but they will begin in the first half of 2007.
According to Karen Miller, Frontier’s communications manager, the layoffs are part of a call center restructuring. Frontier’s new operations will center around decreasing their call centers and instituting a new work-at-home program. Miller said the work-at-home program was tried out at another plant, and due to its success there, it is being implemented nation wide. Frontier plans to go from 14 nation wide calling centers, to only three or four, supported by the work-at-home program. One of the call centers will be a new facility, opening in Deland, Fla. The repair jobs from the Sherburne office will be transferred to the new location.
Miller explained the repair department will be the only function in Sherburne impacted by the restructuring. “All other functions – assignment, dispatch, testing – they will remain in Sherburne,” she said. Frontier is currently in contract negotiations with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 363, the union representing the Sherburne employees.
“We understand this is a difficult situation for everyone. That’s why we’re trying to do everything we can. We’re working with the union to negotiate job losses,” Miller said.
Frontier and union representatives have discussed many possible ways the company can ease the burden to the displaced workers. Nothing has been agreed upon, but several ideas have been proposed. Frontier may hire some of the displaced employees for the work-at-home program. Retirement incentives may be given to some workers. Frontier has discussed providing comprehensive out-placement service to aid the employees in finding alternative employment. They have also discussed a tuition assistance and retraining plan.
According to Miller, Frontier will not know how many employees will be affected until union negotiations are completed, although unofficial reports say as many as 40 jobs will be displaced. She does not expect another announcement until mid-November or later.
