Chenango Fire Police honor their own

SHERBURNE – The Chenango County Fire Police Association held its annual banquet Friday evening at The Fox Run Event Center. The fire police are volunteer firefighters who now serve a supporting role to emergency personnel. They secure accident scenes, control traffic and help with crowd control. Their services have saved the City of Norwich alone around $22,000 so far this year that it would have paid in labor costs to replace the fire police volunteers with salaried emergency personnel, said Mayor Joseph Maiurano. The fire police also save the county and other local communities countless dollars.
The Fire Police Association includes 74 members from nearly every town in Chenango County. All members are or were volunteer firefighters; many also wear a number of other hats including EMS.
“I find the fire police are the most loyal. They’re on the scene as soon as it happens and are the last to leave. I have the most respect for them, they’re fine men and woman,” said Norwich Town Supervisor David Law, who is also a fire police volunteer. Law has served the community for over 45 years as a volunteer firefighter or as a member of the fire police.
Friday night’s event was to appreciate a group that rarely receives the recognition for their valuable services. “Sometimes we forget the magnitude of your contributions,” said Maiurano. The event also had special recognition for those who had volunteered a great number of hours and honored a few with a lifetime achievement award. Maiurano also presented a proclamation from the City of Norwich declaring Oct. 20, 2006 Fire Police Day.
“I like people, and you meet an awful lot of people. Many of us wear different hats and you see each other all the time. This group is like one big family,” said Fire Police Treasurer Doc DeBoer.
Fire Police President Rick McConnell, speaking for the executive officers of the group, said, “A special thanks to all the members of our county fire police association for another successful year. With your dedication all of this evening’s activities would not have been possible. This alone shows the professional side of each member who works the many details we perform each year.”
The organization is fully supported by donations. If you would like to make a donation or would like to volunteer for the fire police, contact your local department.
