Greene advances in overtime

Boys’ Soccer

Greene 3, Windsor 2 (OT)
GREENE – Rick Tallman was thankful for the absence of a deja vu experience.
Mike Porter lifted Greene (15-3-1) into the second round of the Section IV playoffs scoring four minutes into the second overtime. Porter scored the game’s initial goal and has 23 tallies on the season. “Last year Windsor beat us in a shootout and I was hoping it wouldn’t happen again,” Tallman said. If the second overtime had played out to a tie, the game would have gone to penalty shots. “I was glad it didn’t happen and Mike came through for us. When the game is on the line, we can usually count on him.”
A Porter goal followed by Ryan Utter’s unassisted tally in the first 18 minutes of the second half gave Greene a commanding two-goal edge.
Windsor, who won just four games in the regular season, showed its mettle tying the game after Tyler Faulkner and Kyle Krause goals.
“Windsor played a pretty solid game and we weren’t at our best,” Tallman said. “We made a lot of mistakes and weren’t as aggressive to the ball as I would have liked.”
Greene plays at second-seeded Dryden Friday afternoon.

Walton 3, Oxford 2
OXFORD – Walton rallied from one goal down scoring the tying and go-ahead goals just 70 seconds apart to eliminate Oxford (9-5-4) from the Class C playoffs.
Trent Wood tied the game for Walton with 10:20 to play, while Cody Tweedy put the Warriors in front to stay moments later.
The Blackhawks were without leading scorer Kilean Maynard, who was away at a leadership conference. Also, starting wing Taylor Bates went down with an injury early in the second half, and didn’t return.
“The tempo was a little slower without Kilean in the lineup, but everyone else stepped it up in his absence,” said Oxford coach Tim Paden. “Walton just outplayed us in the final minutes of the game.”
Scott Seiler had both goals for Oxford.

Sherburne-Earlville 3, Cortland 1
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville advanced to the second round of the Section III, Class B playoffs, and sophomore Karli Harris established a new single-season scoring record for the Marauders (12-2-2).
Harris netted the opening goal 20 minutes into the game, and Danielle Green scored off a penalty corner from Harris for the 2-0 halftime lead.
Harris’ tallied unassisted in the second half giving her 19 on the season to break Kelly Cooman’s mark. “Cortland is a pretty good team with a different style than us,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “There were times where they controlled the pace and beat us to the ball, but we were the more explosive team and played really well in the offensive circle.”
S-E plays either Cazenovia or Homer on Saturday.
