Twins celebrate their 90th birthday

OXFORD – Living through some of the best and some of the worst times in history, a pair of twins celebrate their life with a week-long family celebration.
Peter Hobby and Elizabeth (Hobby) Foley are celebrating their 90th birthday today. Peter came from New Jersey last week to help Elizabeth celebrate their birthday and take part in a week-long family festivity. Elizabeth resides at the NYS Veterans’ Home in Oxford. Along with Peter came two nieces, Maureen Roccia and Jackie Zuniga both from New Jersey. Family gathered including Elizabeth’s sons, Richard from New York and Dennis from Florida. Other family members were also on hand to help celebrate the amazing feat of reaching 90.
The twins were born on Nov. 1, 1916 in Lyndhurst, N.J. Born to Sarah and George Hobby Sr. and were two out of seven children. Having lived through both World Wars, as well as every war since, the Depression and other events in history, the twins recall experiencing some down times. On the other hand the twins lived through positive points in history, including some of greatest inventions of all time.
Family members say the twins are filled with interesting tales of their childhood and how the world used to be. Some of the greatest stories they say are from the days when the twins were young. The twins recall that their father had once said he had joined the Seabees, a Naval construction force. Lying to get in due to his older age, no one believed him. After dinner their father left and he didn’t return for two years. As it turned out George Hobby Sr. traveled on one of the same ships who his son, George Jr. was also traveling on. One day before the invasion of Tinian Island in the South Pacific, George read a letter from his wife saying his son was on his ship. Neither father or son knew they had been traveling on the same ship for over a month.
Both Peter and Elizabeth love to reminisce about the old days and about their family and the way it was way back when.
