Maiurano wins another year as mayor

NORWICH – Tuesday, residents of Norwich elected Republican Joseph P. Maiurano to finish the mayoral term he has been filling since the death of Mayor Robert C. Raphael in May. Democratic candidate Michael Carnrike came in a close second, trailing Maiurano by an unofficial tally of 263 votes, and Independent Vince Anthony came in a distant third.
“Now that the elections are over, we can get back to work,” Maiurano said. He said he hopes to work with the residents of the city, addressing their needs. Maiurano hopes more people will take an interest in city government, and get involved.
“This is a tremendous city,” he said, “and we need to be positive in what we do.” Maiurano discussed the need for Norwich residents to support local business, and to “be an advocate of the city.” He thanked everyone who helped him, and acknowledged the work of his competitors, saying, “My hat is off to Carnrike and Anthony. They made me work hard to win this election.”
Carnrike was a gracious loser. He went to Maiurano’s victory party at the Ontario Hotel and congratulated the mayor. “The people made a choice,” Carnrike said. He hopes he will be able to work with Maiurano to address the needs of the city. “Someone had to lose,” Carnrike said, taking his defeat in stride. “You probably haven’t seen the last of me.”
He seemed enthused by the large voter turnout, and the closeness of the race. “I want to say thank you to all the voters,” Carnrike said, also taking the opportunity to acknowledge the support of his wife. “I definitely plan to run again in the future. There’s still a lot of hope out there,” Carnrike said.
Maiurano’s victory means he will fill out the remaining year of Raphael’s two-year term. Another mayoral election will be held next November to see who will fill the post for the next full term.
Anthony also plans on running again next year. “This year was a learning experience for me,” Anthony said. Being new to politics, Anthony said this year he learned what to do and what not to do, and he will be ready to try again next year. “I’m going to continue going to council meetings to get a better handle on what’s going on in the city,” Anthony said, looking forward to next year. “It was a good, clean race. If Joe won, people must be pleased with the way things are.”
