McDonough lays out walking trail
McDONOUGH – After a year of planning, collecting and implementing, the new walking trail project provided by the McDonough Improvement Committee is underway.
With the help of Dave Sheldon, Sean Ryberg, the Headwaters Youth Conservation Corps, local volunteers, McDonough Town Supervisor Homer Smith, Highway Supervisor Larry Beckwith and Kathy Clemeans, director of the Chenango County Youth Bureau, the walking trail surrounding the town park is currently being constructed.
Living in McDonough and not having sidewalks inspired the idea of a walking trail originally sought after by those who wanted to go walking, but did not feel safe in the road.
The trail has been marked and the excavation is finished. Headwaters started laying landscaping cloth and wood chips Saturday. Additional small stones were also needed to be purchased for the lower wetter areas surrounding the trail. The volunteers are hoping to have the project compete in the next two weeks.
With the approval of the board, Clemens and Smith worked together to receive a $500 grant to make the walking trail a reality. Through community efforts the Improvement Committee has built other attractions in the area including double tennis courts, basketball courts, playgrounds and they also sponsor community concerts seasonally.
“We depend on fund raising programs and support from the community to provide these services,” said chair of the McDonough Improvement Committee Elinor Troicke.
