Norwich merchants unveil plans for the holidays
NORWICH – The Norwich Merchants’ Association is attempting to bolster business this holiday season. “We want to encourage people to shop downtown,” said Lisa Mody, owner of First Edition Bookstore. The association has scheduled events for every Saturday between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
“In previous years, we only had one Saturday event. Now there is something going on every Saturday,” said Anna McLaughlin, owner of McLaughlin’s Department Store. This Saturday, the events will begin with a holiday shopping kickoff. Participating merchants, including First Edition Bookstore, Ives Cream, Hayes Office Products, JC Penney Catalog, Made In Chenango Gift Shop & Gallery, Silvernails Gifts & Florist, The Fish Bowl, Mystical Touch, Skillin’s Jewelers, Coffee Connection, Arnell Music, Seasons and McLaughlin’s Department Store will remain open after the Holiday Parade of Lights, until 9 p.m. Free baby-sitting services will be available from 7:30 to 9:30 at the YMCA for children kindergarten through sixth grade. Complimentary gift wrapping will be offered at Coffee Connection with a receipt from a downtown merchant.
“Hometown Holidays” is the theme of the second week of holiday events. On Dec. 2, participating businesses will be serving free refreshments to their guests. Ives Cream will be giving away roasted chestnuts from noon until 2 p.m. Made In Chenango will hold its annual open house from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The First Edition Bookstore will hold a free story telling event, featuring “The Polar Express.” Children are encouraged to come in their pajamas to enjoy the entertainment. It will begin at 11:30.
On Dec. 2, you can have breakfast with Santa at the Chenango Memorial Hospital Bistro between 8 and 10 a.m. Tickets are available at the CMH Gift Shop. Santa will no longer be appearing in the park, but you can find him at a different merchant locations each week. In addition to appearing at the CMH breakfast, Santa can also be seen at First Edition Bookstore from noon until 3 p.m. Parents can bring their cameras if they would like to snap a photo. Every week, Santa will be giving out free movie tickets to his first 60 visitors, good for a children’s film, to be screened at 3 p.m. on Dec. 23 at the Colonia Theater.
The Stocking Stuffer Scavenger Hunt will be held on Dec. 9, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Details of the event will be published in an ad in the Pennysaver and The Evening Sun. According to Mody, the Boo Bash Scavenger Hunt was such a success that the Norwich Merchants were asked to duplicate it for the Holiday season. Free roasted chestnuts will be available at the Coffee Connection from noon until 2 p.m. The Black Bear Winery will be having a wine tasting event beginning at noon at McLaughlin’s Department store, and this week, Santa will be giving out 60 more movie tickets at Ives Ice Cream from noon until 3 p.m. A live brass quintet will be performing outside of Arnell music from noon to 2 p.m. on both Dec. 9 and Dec. 16.
“People always enjoy the brass band, so we’re doing it for two weekends this year,” McLaughlin said.
A special shopping promotion will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16 at participating merchants. The Norwich Merchants will have a coordinated flyer put together, advertising their special deals. Ives Cream will be hosting a free make your own ice cream event from noon until 2 p.m. That Saturday, Made In Chenango will provide the roasted chestnuts from noon until 2 p.m. and Santa will appear at Hayes Office Products from noon until 3 p.m.
The last Saturday before Christmas will be customer appreciation day. From noon until 3 p.m. Santa will be at the Coffee Connection, giving out the last 60 tickets for the children’s movie. The movie will begin at 3 p.m. at the Colonia Theater. No tickets can be purchased for the event; you must have a ticket from Santa. Roasted chestnuts will be available from noon until 2 p.m. at First Edition.
Mody hopes that these events will encourage people to make shopping down town Norwich part of their holiday festivities. “There’s a lot going on. Downtown has a lot to offer,” Mody said.
