Warner Road Christmas display has charitable aim

NORWICH – Those passing by the home of Richard and Dr. Karen Banks Lindner either slow the car down to a crawl or turn back around for a closer look. Richard Lindner has decorated the front lawn of his Warner Road home with over 35,000 lights, speakers and elaborate ornaments, drawing at times over 110 amps of electricity. “Most homes can only draw 100 amps but last year we up graded to support 200,” said Richard.
The lights draw spectators and traffic, but this all supports a good cause. The Lindner family provides a large food basket at the end of their driveway and collect food for the Emmanuel Episcopal Church. “Last year we collected somewhere between 300 and 400 pounds of food,” said Richard.
Richard is a stay-at-home dad, who got the inspiration to begin decorating from his daughter, 4 year old Tyler, three years ago. “When she was one, she just loved Christmas lights. And I thought to myself what could I do?” said Richard. He began putting the display together the day after Halloween and says he put in 100 hours of work – and Tyler put in 25 hours to help her father any way she could. Richard says because of the computer helping to manage the power, the whole thing costs him between $100 and $150 in electricity a month to run.
The display includes a dozen giant blow-up characters, a 24-foot wire Christmas tree and 20 flood lights that change the entire house from red to green. During all this, the lights are programmed to blink with Christmas music from 95.9 FM via computer, but if you don’t have a radio, two heavy duty outdoor speakers are set up on the lawn.
The display is wired through a computer system called Light-O-Rama with about five miles of extension cords, said Richard. “These aren’t the cheap ones either.” said Lindner. He found much of his information on a forum from the web site planetchristmas.com.
Lindner said, “I invite everyone to come up and enjoy the lights.” The Lindner home is located at 121 Warner Road, which is about one mile up Polkville Hill Road, on the right. Richard also said he would like to thank his neighbors very much for putting up with all the traffic, lights and “U-turns in their drive ways.”
