Norwich students chosen for pretigious music event

NORWICH – Two Norwich High School seniors got the chance to play and sing among the elite last weekend in a chance of a lifetime opportunity.
In May, Gabrielle Chwazik-Gee for chorus and Jared Nichols on tuba demonstrated their talents and abilities to compete for a chance to play among the most musically talented students from across the state. Each student had to play a solo piece at level six, the hardest level one could play.
Chwazik-Gee sang “Voichesapete” by Mozart and Nichols played “Sonata for Tuba” by Frackenpohl. The students were then picked for the NYSSMA All-State Conference from the high scores each received. As many as 15,000 students audition, and from that only about 900 are chosen.
Months later, these two seniors were on their way to Rochester to Eastman Theater at the Eastman School of Music. Over a four-day weekend, the students practiced and rehearsed endlessly in preparation for the concert that was held Sunday.
“It was a really good experience. We played with world-renowned musicians. Andre Thomas was conducting and it was neat because we have played his music before,” Chwazik-Gee said.
Accompanying them was Norwich High School Music Director Don Burke, Greene 6-12 Instrumental Director Heather Kriesel and Greene student performer Page Vermaat. Parents were asked to come see the students perform at Sunday’s concert.
“The opportunity was great. I was impressed with the caliber of musicians and everyone played exceptionally,” Nichols said.
Both Gabrielle and Jared, through a lot of devotion and hard work, represented the best that New York State has to offer, said Burke. Neither student has had any private formal training outside of school and both have the natural gift of talent, he said. Both Jared and Gabrielle agree by playing at this event, it brings them personally to another level with their music. As these students go on to college, neither plan to major in music, but both intend to keep up with it in their extra-curricular activities.
