S-E 53, Ilion 23
ILION – Sherburne-Earlville’s sterling defensive effort Thursday night helped it atone for a loss to Ilion in last year’s sectional semifinals.
“They ended our season last year, so that was definitely on our minds when we played tonight,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “We shut them down in every way; there was some serious defense being played.”
Ilion was held without a point from the midway point of the first quarter until the two-minute mark of the second, a 10 1/2-minute stretch in which S-E rattled off 22 straight points.
Gabe Fowler canned four three balls and had all 16 of his points at the break leading the Marauders (3-0) to a 32-8 lead.
Wilson Rose added 15 in the win. “It was just outstanding man-to-man defense, and everyone that came into the game played with that same level of intensity,” Vibbard said.

Wrestling

S-E 56, Cooperstown 6
SHERBURNE – Even though the match was well in hand by the time the 152-pounders stepped onto the mat, there was no lack for excitement in S-E’s opening-match victory Thursday over Cooperstown.
“It was the match of the night,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks of Wheeler Brunschmid’s victory over Josh White.
White came into the meet as the number two ranked Section III wrestler at 145 pounds, while Brunschmid was coming off a fourth-place sectional finish last winter.
Brunschmid took command of the match in the second period with a reversal and went on to win 9-5. “It was a packed house and we have 34 kids on our squad,” Hicks said. “This is why they’re here.”
S-E benefited from three forfeits to roll to the victory. The Marauders compete in the Richfield Springs Tournament Saturday.

WHITNEY POINT – Whitney Point took advantage of Norwich’s inexperience, and grabbed 18 points on three Tornado forfeits to hand the Tornado their third loss this season.
Dakota Kohout (152) won his first match this season pinning Nate Marshall in 1:27. Josh Steward (189) and Tanner Cummings (103) gave Norwich its other two wins.
“Unfortunately, with as many young kids as we have and the holes in the lineup, that may be the story of our year,” said Norwich coach Terry Hagenbuch of the forfeits. “Kohout is on the board now with a win, and now we’ll see what happens from here. We’ve told our wrestlers that they need to step into a varsity role and wrestle like varsity wrestlers.”
Norwich is at Chenango Valley Tuesday.

Greene 113, Cooperstown 63
COOPERSTOWN – Greene won its 25th straight Midstate Athletic Conference matchup, and diver Chris Osterwald shattered his own school record Thursday.
Osterwald, who also won the 100 backstroke, scored a 218.15 to best his previous mark by 27 points. “He went to a camp at Penn State this past year, and he has more confidence now with his high degree of difficulty dives,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “He is the defending Class C champion, so he is picking up where he left off.”
The Trojans dropped just one event and improved to 3-0 as they host Norwich Monday – the only team to hand them a defeat last year. “It seems like each meet, someone steps up and swims a phenomenal time,” Platta said.
