COPES CORNERS – G-MU raced to an 18-point halftime lead, and maintain strong defense throughout to improve to 2-0 in Tri-Valley League play (2-1 overall).
“We were very sharp in the first half, shot it well, and executed our press efficiently,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman. “The kids followed the scouting report to a tee.”
Drew Hartman, Cody Hall, and Peter Schmidt all had 11 points for the Raiders, and the scored was spread out evenly down the lineup. “That’s one of the most positive outcomes we could have asked for,” Hartman said. “If you spread the scoring out, the defense doesn’t know where the offense is coming from, and they can’t focus on one person.”

B-G drops three in NYC tournament
NEW YORK CITY – Bainbridge-Guilford learned a lesson in quickness falling in three games in as many days this weekend in New York City.
Willie McGinnis scored 48 points over the three tournament games to lead B-G (1-3) including a 21-point effort in a 68-41 loss to Blessed Sacrament Sunday. “The quickness (by the opponents) was overwhelming compared to us, but each game we improved a little bit, and our foul shooting improved,” said B-G coach Ben Nelson. “Three games in three days is tough, especially against that level of competition.”

UV, S-E place one-two at Richfield Springs
RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Unadilla Valley returned to the top spot in the Richfield Springs Tournament, and Sherburne-Earlville placed second as the two local clubs dominated the Section III competition.
Tyler Peet (103), Shayne Wilcox (135), and T.J. Brownell (160) won titles for the Storm, who placed 10 of 12 wrestlers among the top four. “This was a nice tournament for us, but we still have a lot to prove,” said UV first-year coach Jim DuVall. “We lost a lot to graduation and have some new faces in the lineup. So far we’ve performed well, and when we get in more pressure-intense matches, we’ll see what they’re made of.”
S-E nearly matched the Storm finishing with nine place-winners including titles from Mike Ezzo (171), John Posson (215), and Chris Pike (275).
Ezzo, a transfer from Oxford, won a close decision in the finals for his first tournament title, Posson pinned all his opponents for the crown, and Pike showed superior quickness in the heaviest division taking his title. “Obviously we would have liked to win, but this was a good performance for us – one of our best in a team tournament in a while,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks. “I think our upper weights will probably be our strong suit in tournaments this year.”

Dan Wenzel (200 IM), Ryan Marchant (100 fly) and Cole Adams (500 free) garnered wins for the Tornado, who were outscored by 14 points in the three relays. “We expected it could be a close meet, and there were some close races, but M-E usually came out on top in those races,” said Norwich coach Rick Marchant. “We got behind early, and in a four-lane pool, it’s difficult to make up the points.”

David Cerasani had his second straight 20-point game leading the Vikings with 21 points, while Robert Guyer tacked on 16. “Defensively, we were able to create some turnovers, and that gave us a chance at some transition baskets,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We needed that because we’re really struggling in our halfcourt offense.”
