Suspect re-arrested in animal cruelty case
NORWICH – Police served a warrant out of county court and arrested a man suspected of starving several dogs, killing one, at his home in Greene. A bench warrant was issued for Douglas A. Haslett for failing to appear in court on two separate occasions and for also failing to appear for his court-ordered evaluations. Haslett was arrested early this morning at around 2 a.m. and is being held in county jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail.
The Sheriff’s Department previously arrested Haslett on Sept. 11 for 10 counts of failure to license a dog, nine counts of cruelty to animals and one count of aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony. One of the dogs was found in the defendant’s freezer, apparently placed there after it had been starved to death, said the District Attorney’s office.
Judge Howard Sullivan ordered that Haslett be psychologically evaluated in September. Haslett’s attorney, Alan Gordon, said his client was being cooperative up to that point with law enforcement agencies and acknowledged the fact he may need psychological treatment.
