Streaking Marauders extend unbeaten record

Sherburne-Earlville 56, Sauquoit Valley 41
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville stands alone as the last remaining undefeated boys’ basketball team in Chenango County winning its fifth straight game Wednesday night.
The Marauders scored the final seven points of the first half, and when the Indians had the contest to within seven points in the third, went on a 14-2 salvo to create a large bulge. “We can be a streaky team on offense,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “We still had too many silly turnovers that we’ll need to clean up for Friday’s game (against Cooperstown).”
Wilson Rose cleaned up, indeed, on the inside scoring 19 points – most on layups in the low post – Gabe Fowler netted 16, and Jon Pinney added 12 in the victory.
The Marauders face fellow league unbeaten Cooperstown tomorrow night, then host Westhill Saturday for the S-E Tip-Off Tournament title.

Oneonta 69, Norwich 43
ONEONTA – Oneonta’s second line of scorers made the Tornado pay in the first quarter, and the Jackets made a 12-point first-stanza lead hold up in pulling away for the 26-point win Wednesday.
It was the first loss for the Tornado after a three-victory start to the season. “They are very good, but it’s a deceiving final score,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott. “We fought really hard with them up until the final quarter.”
Norwich’s focus on defense was to slow Dan O’Brien and Andrew Tenace, the top two returning scorers for Oneonta. In limiting those two, guard Lance Ratchford pocketed 10 points in the first, and senior forward Devin Vanderhoof nailed three baskets for another six markers. Combined with Norwich’s inability to finish on the inside, Oneonta led 20-8 at the first turn.
That same double-digit margin held until a 17-3 final quarter left the tally a bit more lopsided than one might think. “We tried to make it happen (a comeback) too fast in the last quarter, and we didn’t play well offensively,” Abbott said. “We did everything we weren’t supposed to do.”
Nate Foote scored 16 points and Robert Martin added 10 for Norwich (3-1), who host Johnson City Friday.

Osterwald bettered his previous record by over six points scoring a 224.85. “There are a lot of oohs and aahs when he’s diving...just incredible,” said Greene coach Mike Platta of Osterwald.
The Trojans sweep the 200 freestyle and diving, and took first and second in the 500 free, 200 freestyle relay, and 100 fly to gain command of the match. “I was curious to see how we would bounce back after such a draining meet with Norwich on Monday,” Platta said. “The athletes were able to refocus and put total effort into their swims tonight.”

BAINBRIDGE – Coming off a loss by criteria last week to Tioga, B-G/Afton rebounded with a one-point win over Johnson City, the program’s first dual meet victory over the Wildcats in head coach Brandon MacNaught’s 11-year tenure.
“I have the utmost respect for their coach (Pete Capone) and their program,” MacNaught said. “This is very big win for us, and it was a total team effort. The guys that lost, by not giving up a point here or there, they won for us.”
Among those noteworthy defeats were Paul Parsons (130) and Charlie Engel (160), who fought off their backs to avoid a pin in losing major decisions. “Either one of those guys get pinned, we lose the match,” MacNaught summed up.
The Bears won five of the first six matchups to take control Danny Gormley (103), Chris Burnett (112), and Cody Ruff (215) won by decisions, and Kris Stafford (171) along with Darin Terpstra scored pins to create a 20-6 lead. “There are still a lot of things we need to fix, but hopefully this a confidence booster that will carry us through the next few matches.”
