SMTS stages ‘radio show’ version of

SHERBURNE The Sherburne Music Theater Society (SMTS) will be staging a holiday show on Sunday – a radio show version of “It’s A Wonderful Life.”
According to Director Rick Thormahlen, the radio show version of “It’s A Wonderful Life” will be based on an actual Lux radio theater script. The first broadcast of the show was in 1947, and the SMTS tried to create the look of that era with their props. The microphones they will be using look like those from the 1940s.
Eighteen people make up the cast and sound effects crew for the performance. The crew, made up of a mix of SMTS members and former and current high school students, have been working on the production for the last four weeks. “Because it’s a radio show, we’re doing it (the play) just like it would be done in a radio studio,” Thormahlen said. The action of the play will look like it is taking place in a radio studio. The actors will read their lines and the sound technicians will provide the noises to support the actions in the story. “It’s going to be a lot of fun for people,” Thormahlen said.
Thormahlen has been working with the SMTS on and off since the 1970s. He is excited about the chance to direct this radio-style performance. “ ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ is a great Christmas story. I think people who come out to see it will enjoy, not only the message, but also the holiday season.”
“It’s A Wonderful Life” will be performed at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Hamilton Palace Theater. Admission is free and holiday treats will be available.
