NORWICH – Norwich easily overcame a 29-point standout performance by Owego’s Alicia Marhefka, and had its second unit playing out the string by the end of the third quarter in Wednesday’s romp over the Indians.
Alicia Testani scored 21 points and added six assists for Norwich (5-1), who have won five straight games since an opening loss to Maine-Endwell. “I thought we played really well, and with a game Thursday, we wanted to keep our starters rested,” said Norwich coach Bob Branham.
Norwich scored six straight points in just over a minute late in the third quarter to build its biggest lead of 23 points. Kyra Collier hit two shots, and Kala Haltner converted a layup off a Brittany Cargill pass making it 49-26.
Norwich shot the ball well from the start of the game getting three balls from Testani and Melinda Moore to lead 10-0. “Owego plays hard, that’s one thing we expected out of them, but on offense, we were organized, made great choices, and shared it well,” Branham said.
Moore finished with 11 points for the Tornado, who travel to Windsor tonight.

OXFORD – Andy Foote put back an offensive rebound for the go-ahead points and a 51-50 lead as Sidney went on to beat Oxford Wednesday and snap the Blackhawks’ three-game winning streak.
Oxford (3-4) erased a four-point Sidney lead (49-45) in a matter of seconds after Ben Burdick was fouled, and a subsequent technical foul was issued on the Warriors. Burdick hit 3-of-4 foul shots, then laid in the two-pointer making it 50-49.
“We had a couple turnovers toward the end that hurt us, and early on in the game we missed too many easy buckets,” said Oxford coach Tim Davis. “I thought our depth would play out down the stretch, but Sidney finished out pretty well.”
Burdick scored 23 to lead Oxford.

Phil Sanford hit four threes and scored 16 of his career-high 29 points in the last stanza, and Keith Lockwood added a season-high 22 points.
Afton (2-5) scored 32 points in the last quarter to erase the Hornets’ five-point lead. Bryant Winans added 18 points for Afton. “Phil is finally starting to hit his three-point shots,” said Afton coach Dick Winans. “If he thinks about it, it’s over.”

Ezzo (160) won a 6-2 decision over Seth Peter that was one of five straight victories for S-E (4-0). “They moved their kids around so Peter could face Ezzo,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks. “That was a turning point in the match and a big win for us.”
