Norwich native featured on Food Network show
NORWICH – The Food Network television show “‘Unwrapped’ uncovers behind-the-scenes details on classic American food,” its web site says. Next week, the show will air an episode titled “Sweet Imitations,” providing one Norwich native with her 15 minutes of fame.
Bonnie (Mundy) Hanyak graduated from Norwich High School in 1964. An entrepreneur from the beginning, she started her first business in 1984, making crafts in her basement. Hanyak opened her first store, A Touch of Spice, in her father’s pole-barn behind her parent’s house – located near the DCMO BOCES facility. The business faltered, but Hanyak did not give up. After many changes, including relocating to Marcellus, and changing her shop’s specialty from crafts to chocolates and gift baskets, The Chocolate Pizza Company was created.
The Chocolate Pizza Company, located at 60 East Main St. in Marcellus, is a growing business that has had to change locations several times to accommodate its increasing size. Hanyak’s specialties are her pizza and wings. The company makes pizzas, completely formed out of chocolate, and wings, which are potato chips covered in peanut butter and dipped in chocolate.
The chocolate used in Hanyak’s chocolate pizzas was originally created by Martha Jane Cummings of Cummings Candy in 1921. Hanyak purchased the Marcellus based company and has been using the recipe ever since.
The “Sweet Imitations” episode of “Unwrapped” will begin airing on Monday. It can be viewed at 9 p.m. on Dec. 25, 12 a.m. on Dec. 26 and at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 29.
