Quilters make donation to Bida Home in Oxford

OXFORD – The Fly Meadow Quilters recently donated seven lap quilts for residents of the Bida Adult Home. This small group of quilters, out of Oxford, are made up of Nancy Cody, Carol Cruttenden, Barbara Redenback, and one anonymous member. Their group gets together to quilt when time permits to enjoy their hobby with out-of-pocket supplies. This project, however, has given them an important winter goal to fulfill – to give every resident of the Bida Adult Home a lap quilt that desires one.
The Fly Meadow ladies were greeted by Bonnie Smith and Margaret Burke of the Bida Home. Carol Cruttenden held the stack of quilts while the quilting group were given a tour of the facility and got to meet the residents. Margaret, who has been working at the Home for 27 years, has many heartwarming stories. She explained that they are filled to capacity with twenty-four residents (12 men and 12 women). She knows all the wonderful people there, and introduced the quilters to residents: Marjorie Mettler, Iona Harrington, Zilpha “Zip” Denny, Bob Carroll, Fred Wynter, Judd Lamoree, and Ethel Estes who were all happy to pick out lap quilts for themselves. Some quilts were made of printed cotton, and some of polar fleece. Quilt colors were primarily in blues, greens, and tans; there was something to appeal to everyone.
Mrs. Burke ended of the tour in the lovely dining room so all could see the plaque dedicated to the Home’s founder, Stella Bida Lyons, penned in script by Oxford resident, Merritt Russell. Mrs. Lyons ran the home for over 40 years until her passing in 1991. Today the home is managed by her son William Lyons with the same high standards.
The Fly Meadow Quilters have no funding for this project. They did however, hold one quilt raffle to raise money for some batting, otherwise, all has been provided by the members. They will continue to donate their time, labor and materials until enough quilts have been made for the Bida Home residents. If anyone is interested in joining the group or would like to make a donation of either materials or funds, contact Nancy Cody at 843-9397.
