Order Habitat carnations for Valentine's Day
OXFORD – Audrey Johnson, the Head Coordinator for Chenango County Habitat for Humanity, is gearing up for their 14th annual Red Carnation Sale. The sale raises funds to support Chenango County Habitat for Humanity’s current project, a house being built on Adams Street in Norwich, and future projects. Orders for carnations will be taken from Jan. 7-21, by calling Johnson at 843-6249 or Joyce Ardron at 843-9747.
Red carnation prices have not increased over the years – they’re still $1.50/single; $7/half dozen; and $12/dozen. Last year Habitat’s 300+ volunteers sold over 15,000 flowers, raising $9,000 in 2006, and this year they hope to increase that number. Distributions and pick-ups will be on Saturday, Feb. 10 and Monday, Feb. 12 – just in time for Valentine’s Day bouquets for sweethearts.
With great conviction Audrey Johnson said, “Chenango County is being blanketed with red carnations for Habitat for Humanity!”
This selfless dedication is demonstrated each year as Audrey and her assistant coordinators arrange the flower distribution. First the carnations are split up to the four main centers: Greene Zion Episcopal Church; Norwich Broad Street Methodist Church; St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Oxford; and St. Malachy’s Roman Catholic Church in Sherburne. From there, the flower distribution branches out to 49 churches, 120 businesses/schools (staff & student councils)/colleges/health related/adult & nursing homes/civic organizations/real estate agencies/and restaurants. A network of volunteers from 26 communities makes this fund raising possible.
Habitat for Humanity offers “a hand up, not a handout.” Buy red carnations for sweetheart day and help Habitat make dreams come true by helping to provide decent, affordable housing to families.
