Local reps ready to 'roll up their sleeves' with Governor

ALBANY – Newly-elected governor Eliot Spitzer made his first State of the State address Wednesday, underscoring governmental and economic reform as his top priorities.
Sen. Thomas Libous (R-Binghamton) said, “It is a very ambitious schedule, but we’re open to what he has to say in particular relieving property taxes and cutting government jobs. I was welcome to hear a budget with no tax increase.”
The address included Spitzer’s desire to focus more on improving the upstate economy and reducing the growth of state spending. “The governor is singing my tune – property tax relief, helping our upstate economy, and investing in education. I am with him and broadly speaking, support these goals,” said Sen. James L. Seward (R-Milford).
Assemblyman Cliff Crouch (R-Bainbridge) said, “I assure my constituents that my colleagues and I are very excited to press forward with the same agenda we have been fighting for numerous years.”
The governor said, “As the world has transformed and moved forward, it is Albany that has stood still.” Spitzer criticized the lack of government leadership but said he looks forward to a historic bipartisan partnership.
Spitzer’s address outlined many of the same ideas used during his campaign, but many lawmakers are waiting to see if the governor’s promises can match his economics. “The state budget will put flesh on the bones of his proposals, and we will see the details when he unveils his budget later this month,” said Seward.
Libous said he is willing “to roll up his sleeves” for the new governor and that he will begin with a “clean slate.”
