Burglary arrests latest in spate of youthful offenses
NORWICH – Last week police from different agencies arrested nearly 20 youths in unrelated crimes in the Chenango area. Their crimes ranged from consumption of alcohol to 2nd degree burglary and 3rd degree arson.
Generally, a person is considered a youthful offender if they are between the ages of 14 and 18. They generally cannot have a prior juvenile adjudication or felony conviction against them, and the crime committed can’t be a class A felony such as rape, murder or other severe felony. The statutes regarding youthful offenders are fairly complicated, and there is room for a number of exceptions; however, these are the general guidelines. An adjudication carries the same punishment as a regular conviction but is not recorded as a conviction on the youth’s record.
The Oxford Police Department, with the help of the county Sheriff’s Department, arrested eight Oxford youths, ranging from 16 to 18, last week for consumption of alcohol. Two of the youths were also arrested for unlawful possession of marijuana. Allegedly there was a party at a residence on Greene Street while the parent was out of town. Additional charges are pending because the youths were at the residence illegally, but the owner has not yet decided if they will pursue trespassing charges.
The Sheriff’s Department also arrested four North Norwich youths this week, ages, 16, 15, 13, 12 and a 15-year-old Sherburne youth, for several counts of 2nd degree burglary, a felony. Following a police investigation into two separate residential burglaries that occurred in December, police believe the youths entered the two dwellings and stole property from both. They were all released, expect for the 16 year old, who was remanded to County Jail on separate charges.
Also police arrested two North Norwich youths, 16 and 15, for 3rd degree arson, following an investigation conducted by the Sheriff’s Office and the Chenango County Bureau of Fire last week. The youths allegedly intentionally stared a fire at an abandoned house on West Cayuga Road, North Norwich. They allegedly entered the house and then used gasoline and matches to set the structure ablaze. The first department to respond to the fire was the North Norwich Fire Department. The Norwich Fire Department provided mutual aid, along with Sherburne and Smyrna Fire Departments.
The 15-year-old youth was issued a juvenile appearance ticket and released into the custody of his parents. The 16-year-old could face more serious consequences and was remanded to the County Correctional Facility on $1,500 cash bail.
