New Oxford police car on the village’s drawing board

OXFORD – The Oxford police department is rallying to get another police car. The department has two vehicles, but only one is recognized by the Oxford Village Board and subsequently the village will not pay for anything but simple repairs and insurance costs.
The older car is a black 1998 Chevy Lumina with about 100,000 miles on it. To “keep it going” it would cost over $1,600, said Oxford Police Chief Rich Nolan. “It’s break down is imminent and once it does, that will be the end of it,” he said.
“Oxford has only one official vehicle, but almost every other village has two,” said Nolan. A second car would help the department when it receives grants from New York State such as seat belt safety and DWI programs. “The grants pay for additional officers to be on duty to aid in those areas targeted, but if the other car dies on us, it would be very difficult to participate,” said Nolan.
Nolan asked village board members about purchasing even a used vehicle. The board showed resistance to the idea, fearing costs may be too great but said they would review it. Oxford Mayor Terry Stark said the board needed to know more about the secondary costs such as maintenance or any upkeep. The village, like many others, suffered higher than expected costs last year due to flooding.
Oxford’s newest police cruiser is a 2004 Impala which was purchased through a $20,000 grant the department received from the federal government. Nolan says he is actively searching for similar aid in getting a second vehicle, but none is currently available. If a second vehicle is purchased, one with four wheel drive capacity is being considered for rescue and weather situations.
