'Red Hat' ladies converge on Oxford
OXFORD – Some people in Oxford were “seeing red” on Thursday – Red Hat Ladies that is! Representatives from three society chapters of “Red Hatters” met on Jan. 11 at the NYS Veterans’ Home: the “Oxie Dolls” of Oxford; the “Red Hat Mamas of Morrisville;” and the veterans’ own group, the “Red Hat Rollers.”
The Oxie Dolls visiting the Vets’ Home were: Roberta Knoll, Betty Kulakowski, Betty Brown, Jeanne Cline, Jean Rogers, Phyllis Jackson and Anne Jackson. Also visiting the “Red Hat Rollers” was Janet Episcopol, the “Queen Mother” of the “Red Hat Mamas of Morrisville.” Janet actually sponsored the “Red Hat Rollers.”
The phenomenon that is the Red Hat Society (RHS) is due to the social organization’s incredible popularity and the great enthusiasm behind it. The group appeals to women of all walks of life where there is fun after 50. (Before age 50 are known as “Pink Hats”).
Like the Oxie Dolls do, RHS chapters have lunches out, see shows, and tour museums, which many social groups do. The real difference is that these middle aged women wear their colors proud! Like a badge of honor, they don purple dresses and ruby red hats with plumes and flowers (as outlandish as they like), the only rule of the society. Accessories like feather boas and their own signature “hattitude” style shows the world that they embrace their years of experience and share a bond of affection between them. As Anne Jackson put it, “They all took care of everyone, and now it’s time to have some fun!”
The Red Hat Rollers are a chapter of residents of the NYS Veterans’ Home. Jamey Supensky, the activity coordinator, helps these ladies put on their scarlet hats, get together and have a good time each month. They have indoor picnics and teas, sing songs, and share each other’s company. The eldest member is Bertha Deull. Bertha is 106 years old, and may be the eldest member in the state of New York. Nancy Shofkom, resident, is the proud “Queen Mother” of the dozen or so Red Hat Rollers, which also has one Pink Hatter in their group.
As part of this social event, the Oxie Dolls (who are celebrating their 3rd anniversary next month) had a sing-along, modeled their dazzling hats and outfits, and even had parting gifts. The Red Hat Rollers were given shiny purple beaded necklaces, red hats, silk flowers and even some clothing. The spirit of the Red Hats was shared and every woman left with a smile!
