Sherburne names its Citizens of the Year

SHERBURNE – The Sherburne Historic Park Society has announced its choices for the 2006 Citizen of the Year Award.
According to Sherburne Town Historian Rose Wellman, “This prestigious award was initiated in the fall of 2004 as a continuing event each year to honor someone worthy of the designation.” Potential winners are local people, residing now or previously in the Town of Sherburne, who have contributed something to the community. They are nominated by someone also residing in the town. Judges from the Park Society, the Town Board and the Village make the final decision based on the nominations the receive.
In the award’s third year, the distinction has been granted to John and Betty McDaniel of The Sherburne News. “John and Betty have been synonymous with The Sherburne News for many years and have raised a fine family of children on a newspaper printer’s pay,” Wellman said. The McDaniels were unanimously chosen for the distinction.
The McDaniels will be honored at a special program held at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the meeting room of the Sherburne Fire House on West State Street. According to Wellman, local dignitaries and society members will give brief congratulations before Wellman herself speaks about the McDaniels, explaining why they were chosen for the award. Vice President of the Historic Society Leta Card will be the master of ceremonies and light refreshments will be served.
The names of the award recipients will be engraved on a brass plate and added to the previous winners on an oak plaque, provided by Charlie Wellman. The plaque will eventually be put on display at the log cabin in Sherburne’s Historic Park, along with photographs of the winners and their story.
Howard Finch was the honorary winner in the first year of the award. He received the award posthumously for his dedication to the history of Sherburne. Past winners include Bill Kehoe in 2004 and Robert (Doc) Benedict in 2005.
According to Wellman, the community has provided increased support to the Citizen of the Year competition over the last three years. She invites them to continue doing so by coming to Sunday’s ceremony. “Please come and help us honor our two very worthy Citizens of the Year for 2006,” Wellman said.
