NHS students learning about web design
NORWICH – As technology needs increase, so do the needs for advanced technology programming to be taught in high schools worldwide.
Gradually computers have become a centerpoint in many lives around the globe. Business are moving to online operations, advertising is tremendous and the possibilities seem endless.
With the addition of the new high school business teacher Greg Bonczkowski, there is more technology-based programming offered to students at Norwich High School.
New this year is a one-credit, year-long course in web design. Bonczkowski says his course teaches students first the history of the Internet and then from start to finish how to design their own websites. There are 22 students currently taking the course, and as the year has progressed, he says there are numerous other students wanting to participate.
First working with the software notepad, students learned to write Internet HTML code. Sites made with this program take extensive effort and require a great amount of detail, while hundreds of lines of code, if not more, have to be typed exactly perfectly for the site to function.
After starting with the advanced designing concepts, students got to work with a web designing program from Adobe Creative Suite called Go Live, where the code is written for them. The students also learned Adobe Photoshop and other advanced software applications.
Bonczkowski says the work completed was outstanding, and many of his students showed an immediate interest in web design. On hand at Tuesday night’s board of education meeting, Bonczkowski and three of his students presented the work they have accomplished in the course.
From writing code to inserting graphics, the websites were fully functional and professional. Part of the course is providing material to the students in order for them to create a website for a business to give them further professional experience.
The students in this course have also been asked to provide the high school with a new Intranet page. As anyone in the high school logs onto a computer, the opening page will be the one these students created.
